Genre

Task 1 Genre

By Eniola Ijalana

The genre that I’m will be researching on will be a hybrid of sport drama. Since this genre is a hybrid, I’m going to explain each genre’s meaning, codes and convections. The definitions of sports genre are films that are relating to sport settings, events or athlete who are playing the main role in the story. Sport genres of can be also fictional or non-fictional, they’re often in drams but be use in comedy and mostly documentaries. In http://www.slideshare.net/megamargy/conventions-of-sports-films I’ve chose three that are important to me: ‘contain a sport event, a narrative and success/failure ending. For the drama genre is actors that impersonally the character and performing the dialogue or action.

Mise en Scene

In http://www.slideshare.net/coopermatt62/codes-and-conventions-of-drama it explains the Mise-en-scene of drama.

Lightening: ‘Dull lighting (Portrays guilty and bleak nature) Close ups of characters, Low angle and high angle shots- to portrays strength and weakness amongst characters)

Props: ‘Alcohol, Drugs, Guns, Knives and mobile phones’. This idea wasn’t used in the films I’ve chosen but it does resembles a cliché idea of teen drama (sometimes in sport drama e.g. steroids)

Locations: ‘Council Estates, Flats, school, streets of neighbourhood’. It depends of the setting and mood of the story.

Costumes: ‘Hoodies, Tracksuits, Caps, bandanas, chains, trainers, t-shirts and school uniform.

The two films that was relevant to sport drama was ‘Gridiron Gang’ and ‘Coach Carter’

Gridiron Gang

Year: 2006

Director: Phil Joanou

Gridiron Gang is about juvenile criminals given a second chance to play American football. The movie is an hour and 45 minutes with friendship, triages, and achievements this film is worthy for a coming of age film. The main actor is Dwayne Johnson playing as the coach, who believes in second’s chances (the main message of the film) this was based on a true story. The film also done a TV documentary in 1993 (Directed by Lee Stanley) with actors who played themselves in real life

Favourite scene

It’s the last speech before the films ends. One of teammate is reflecting his timeline from the first day he came to jail to the last game. He quote “I hated yall but when coach put this team, things changes” How this film brings moments from all the fights, drama life changing scenes in the film.

Coach Carter

Year: 2005

Director: Samuel L. Jackson

A similar play role with Gridiron Grid but based on a school setting. A high school basketball coach is shock how the team’s academic grades is falling. So the coach decided to help them be more educated while playing basketball at the same time. Samuel L. Jackson plays as a stereotypical black coach who is determining that educating is a gift not wasting for.

The scene that I liked the most was the push up scene

http://www.wingclips.com/movie-clips/coach-carter/ill-do-push-ups

The reason why I chose that scene was that the whole team was willing to take the failure of one teammate. This shows levels of teamwork, love and respect. The favourite part of the scene was a quote saying ‘I’ll do push-ups.’ The music that was playing in the background was soft inspirational orchestra brings the mood of sadness and momentum to the audience.

  1. You’ve approached the genre work methodically and have covered most of the points . Wht you need to do in future is explain in greater depth eg. themes – the value of discipline and the team ethos needed in team sports.
